1. R15 will be good for cruising. Remember it has 6 gears. Has fuel injection, 4 valves & the engine is liquid cooled unlike all other Indian bikes (save P200). However, initial acceleration - which is a factor of the bike's torque - is less than P220. Even less then RTR 180. But more than other 150 cc bikes. If you want very good acceleration, you have to go for Pulsar 220.
2. It really depends on the situation you are into & the capabilities of your own body. For majority of the people, the forward leaning riding position will be a bit of a problem.
3. If you apply throttle on loose surfaces, off-road, any bike will skid. But if you mean a direct comparison with all other bikes, let me make it very clear to you: No. R15's road grip is much better than other bikes. Please don't listen to fools who say R15's tyres are "puny." The tyres were developed specially for R15 by MRF with inputs from the R15 design team. R15 tyres are so good, you can actually use them for track racing. They have leech like grip. They look thin but are better than anything & everything on Indian bikes. There is no uncomfortable feeling so there is nothing that will be noticeable.
4. Okay the Pulsar 220 has projector lamps. What is their output??? 55 watts. R15 has dual headlights. Output for each bulb is 35 watt. So the total output of R15's headlights is 2x35 Watts i.e. 70 watts. No, the R15 does not have backlit switches like the Pulsar series...but does it matter? You will know where the switches are once you own the bike...plus its cool to be as dark as possible in the night. R15 also hasn't self-cancelling indicators. As for dual horns, I don't know. Visit the showroom & check it out. But as I said earlier, R15 has 70 watt headlights...27% more powerful than P220. And believe me when I say they are enough to blind someone in the front.
There is no need to install HID's later on.
5. Yes, R15 doesn't have a main stand. Mileage metre is a publicity stunt. It is never accurate...it simply indicates its numbers based on the bikes throttle position, speed & gear. It is useless. Tell me how many bikes globally have you heard of with this silly stupid feature (other than TVS Flame)??? Low battery indicator too is useless. When you own a bike, you will know when its battery is low (it never will be unless the battery needs replacement or the bike is in garage for months).
Also, please don't believe Hari when he says R15 has poor top end. He is lying. P220's top speed is around 138 kmph. New Karizma's top speed is 135 kmph as claimed by Hero Honda. Yamaha R15's top speed claimed by Yamaha India is also 135 kmph. Do not forget that R15 has 6 gears.
If you see videos of these bikes crossing 140 kmph, let me tell you that every vehicle on Earth has speedo error. The speedometre is always wrong & top speed tests are done with the help of GPS.
If you leave R15, then go for P220. It is real value for money.
If you leave P220, go for RTR 180. Its a performance machine with a perfect balance in every aspect.
Forget Karizma. 223cc & only 17.6 bhp??? R15 is 17 bhp. RTR 180 is 17.3 PS = 17.05 bhp. Pulsar 220 is 21.04 PS = 20.74 bhp. Shame on Hero Honda.

So you are in the market to buy the latest performance bike. there arent many options for you to choose from. Its bang on, either
the yamaha R15 or the bajaj pulsar 220 DTS Fi. Bajaj realised that yamaha had really eaten up on their tail in the sales chart even
with a rs. 1Lakh plus bike, and decided to fight it back their own way. Thats how the 2009 pulsar 220 DTSi was born. you may wonder
about the new pulsar loosing the Fi letters from its name tag. It is true the new pulsar now makes do without a fuel injection system and in
its place is a 32 venturi CV carburettor. so can this bike really hold a candle to the yamaha’s performance and can it prove
at the right place where it matters the most “SALES”. we present the first comparison test report between indias most wanted performance bikes.
LOOKS, APPEARANCE & FEATURES:
First thing that catches your attention on the new pulsar 220 is the all black treatment. Although now common with almost all of the bajaj bikes
this is the first time it is appearing on the pulsar 220, and it really adds up to the sporty character of the bike. Once seated on the bike you are greeted
by a nice looking digital display with a new carbon coloured tacho.

Other than the small “F” logo on either side of the front semi fairings and golden
finished brake calipers, rest of the bike remains unchanged. One fine thing about the pulsars switch gear are that they are back lit, and it is a very nice touch I must admit.
On the other hand, the yamaha R 15 looks more like a scaled down R1. The full fairing with twin head lights lend it a supersports look. Although the bike feels a tad tiny compared to other bikes, it is sleek for the job it does. The R15 also has the best looking digital speedo in the market, the well marked tachometer and the tell tale lights are easy to read and have a cool blue back lighting.
RIDE, HANDLING & BRAKING:
Sit on the Yamaha R15 and you immediately feel the need for speed. Such is the seating position, low and lean. The sporty clip on handle bars and nicely rear set foot rest give the R15 the most sportiest riding position ever. The R15 is the first and only Indian motorcycle to come out with a twin spar steel frame and a monocross link rear suspension. The front is a twin telescopic unit, which is usual on most Indian bikes. The suspension is set a little soft keeping in mind the Indian road conditions, but the overall geometry of the chasis has been tuned to offer best in class handling. Around a race track the R15 can not be touched in the handling department. Turn in is razor sharp and so is the mid corner stability. The bike feels extremely agile and safe around a fast corner. On the road too the R15 feels at home, except for the crouched seating position, that takes people some time to get used to.

Things are now a little different with the new pulsar 220. this bajaj bike has never been know for its handling prowess. Mainly due to the soft shock absorbers and a chasis geometry which is more relaxed compared to the sporty R15. To handle all this, the bajaj engineers have made the front shocks a little stiffer, by changing the valves inside the telescopic forks. This change really makes its presence felt when u grab that strong front disc brake and haul the bike down from crazy speeds. The older pulsar had a problem of excessive dive under braking, which is almost non existent in the 2009 model. But this has taken a toll on the ride quality as the stiffer shock absorbers don’t really cushion the road undulations as well as the older pulsar. The bike comes with the same broad tyres, although now with a softer compound rubber that helps increase the grip levels. While all these modifications have improved the pulsars handling, it can never compete with the R15 on a race track or even a twisty ghat road. The R15’s handling is simply light years ahead of the pulsars.
Both the bikes come with a front as well as rear disc brakes. Although the new pulsar now comes with a steel braided front brake fluid hose which reduces hose flex and gives a sharp as well as direct feel to the braking.
ENGINE, GEARBOX AND PERFORMANCE:
The R15’s single cylinder 149.8cc engine is filled to the brim with pure technology. Liquid cooling, 4 valve head, fuel injection, diasil coated engine cylinder, forged piston and what not. But the engine still develops only 17ps of power and 15nm of torque much lower than expected. The engine is mated to a 6 speed gearbox, which is well spaced and has a nice actuation feel to it. Once on the move the R15’s 17bhp can be felt only after 7000rpm or so, such is the engines tuning and setup, it makes power only at higher rpm’s. low rpm pull is decent but not good enough to poter around town or for stop go traffic.

On a slight contrast the pulsar 220 has a air and oil cooled single cylinder engine. Fuel injection has been scraped and is replaced with a newly developed UCAL UCD 32 size carburetor, in other words the largest carburetor ever to be used on an Indian bike. in addition to this, other modifications like graphite coated piston to reduce friction, high lift camshaft, bigger exhaust resonator(exhausTEC) has helped increase the output of the engine to 21.04ps with torque remaining the same 19.12 nm. To improve the cooling system bajaj has also increased the size of the oil cooler by about 33%. Now all this translates to unadulterated performance on the road. Touch the throttle and the engine revs like nobody’s business, the amount of thrust in the midrange puts every other bike to shame. Pin the throttle at about 3000rpm and iam not exaggerating the P220 surges ahead like a mini superbike. In 0 to 100kmph the P220 is the quickest in the country, infact 100 kmph comes up flashing on the digital speedo much more often. The 5 speed gearbox felt a bit notchy compared to the R15 with 1 or 2 mishifts in between, but we think the gearbox will set in properly once it piles on some miles. The 5th gear ratio has been made taller to increase top speed and aid cruisability. So out on the highway the bike easily cruises at 110 kmph or even 120kmph without much stress. We reached a speedometer displayed top speed of 141kmph with more rpm left. so we can safely assume the real speed to be more than 135kmph, which is the fastest in the country. But only gripe about the engine is the amount of vibration it produces. Right from the lower rpm’s the bike starts vibrating a lot, mainly surfacing through the front fairing and handle bars, but it is not something that you cant live with. Other than this the engine is a real beauty. The performance simply leaves the R15 in dust!!!
PRICE & VERDICT:
People buying a bike from this segment usually don’t give a second look at the fuel efficiency figure of these bikes, but still both the bikes would easily manage to give about 35kmpl with the R15 slightly higher due to the fuel injection system. So to cut it all short and simple, the R15 costs 1,07,XXX rs , where as the Pulsar 220 costs 79,XXXrs both OTR Chennai almost 30,000rs of difference. The R15 may have a better technology in the form of liquid cooling and fuel injection system and better handling package to justify the 1lakh rs plus price tag, but the pulsar with almost all the bells and whistles and actually better performance than the Yamaha beats it flat on the power to money ratio. All said if I were in the market to get a performance bike I would close my eyes and head to the bajaj showrooms.

Bajaj is going to introduce Pulsar 350cc by 2012. Bajaj is making of Pulsar 350cc and will commercially launch by 2012.
The company has not done anything dramatic, despite its successes with the high end Pulsar models over the years but the Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-I gets fame as Fastest Indian Motorcycle.
But Now Bajaj Pulsar going to break own record by launching Pulsar 350cc. Bajaj Pulsar 350cc is like Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-I and would also have an oil cooled system which is essential for such a high capacity power plant.
The oil cooled system over a water cooled system used because it will save space and Lesser weight will help in better performance and mileage.
Bajaj Pulsar 350cc engine platform would be used in various variants and will help Bajaj to foray into the premium motorcycle segment in all over the world including India.

2011 Bajaj Pulsar 250 / 350 could be powered by KTM
Be it the Yamaha Fazer 250 or the Bajaj Pulsar 250 / 300 / 350, the rumors, speculations and wishes just don’t stop! Now there is more dough on the upcoming 2011 Bajaj Pulsar line-up. A couple of days back we told you that Mr. RajivBajaj officially announced to the media, the launch of a new Pulsar by the year 2011. He also stated that the newPulsar will sport a new look and an engine with advanced technology.
Close on the heels of this reports, comes another stunner. It comes in the form of KTM’s third quarter 2009/10 financial report which reads, “In addition to the already entered KTM markets, new market opprtunities in emerging markets come along with the serial production of entry-level street motorcycles (125cc to 350cc) which will be launched in late fall 2010 in cooperation with Bajaj Auto Ltd. The first step will be Brazil, where the market offensive is already in the preparation stage.”
Now we all knew about the 125cc KTMs that were showcased at the 2009 EICMA in concept form. We were even told byBajaj that these KTM 125cc bikes will be launched in India as well and the engines will be manufactured locally. But what catches our attention now is the 125cc-350cc bracket that is being developed by both the companies. We had reports earlier that the new 2011 Pulsar flagship model is going to use a parallel twin engine. So if that report is to be believed and if the 125cc engine is any pointer towards the technology used, then expect the new Pulsar to boast of a 250cc / 350cc Parallel Twin engine with a four valve cylinder head, double overhead camshaft (DOHC), liquid cooling and fuel injection.
These engines are being co-developed by Bajaj and KTM in Mattighofen. One of our sources has confirmed that the development of the bike is going as per schedule and Bajaj is working hard on the localisation of the components to keep the price tag as low as possible for the new flagship 2011 Pulsar.

pulsar 220, modified
The bike simply looks awesome and much better than the earlier white Bajaj Pulsar 220. The fairing and the foot-rest are from the Yamaha R15, monoshock is from the Honda Unicorn, the handle bar and the swing-arm has been customized.
But all this didn’t come easy. Lots of trial and error. Earlier the bike had a customized fairing. The expenditure on the modifications is around Rs. 20,000/- (with a major chunk of the amount being spent on parts) and we surely think its money well spent. The owner of the bike has got a very good offer and is selling the bike. He will buy another Bajaj Pulsar 220 and modify it in a different way. We can’t wait and we are sure you can’t either.
Bajaj-KTM-Kawasaki tie-up is a success formula
Bajaj’s has brought out enough successful products in the past to showcase what it is capable of. From the time of the Chetak, KB 100 (aka the Kawasaki gto-100) to the Caliber, etc, some have been Bajaj’s own designs and some were taken from its tech partner Kawasaki.
Even the Pulsar’s engine was derived from the Kaswasaki’s KLX series. So seeing the company’s track record and its potential, there is no doubt that it has the ability to surprise us with something new all the time.
Even though Bajaj on its own is a global player, that is not where it wants to keep it self. The tie- up between Bajaj, the Austrian motorcycle company KTM and Kawasaki, was conceived with a very different motive. That of a supreme dominance.
All the three brands have their own legacy behind them. Kawasaki has the legacy of having the largest product range, KTM having its own legacy of lust evoking bikes and Bajaj having its own legacy of its age and reliability.
So what are we looking at in the future? Well we are about to witness the birth of commonization. Yes, three brands, having their own product profiles but taking parts from a common source. Their alliance is based on the pretext of mutual benefit and the ability to share tech seamlessly between the three such as to maintain their current range of products but still be able produce components common to all three brands. Also since india has one of the most cost efficient production facilities, we might even be looking at production of all three brands under one roof.
